THE ULTIMATE HAWAIIAN ISLANDS LDS CHURCH HISTORY TOUR    (Oahu and Maui)

SUMMER 2011

POSSIBLE TOUR DATES: May 29-June 5, June 26-July 3, July 10-17, June 12-19

Day 1 (Saturday)

Aloha!  We will fly to the Hawaiian Island Oahu (meaning of Oahu is “the meeting place”) where we are greeted with a fresh flower Hawaiian Lie.  We will board our executive air-conditioned coach complete with on board restroom facilities.   We then traverse through the city of Honolulu and head towards the North Shore; one of the most beautiful places on earth!  On the way we will learn of some of the great culture and LDS stories attached to Hawaii and the North Shore.  We will arrive at the luxurious Turtle Bay Resort, where we will spend the first three nights!  The evening After we freshen up we will be on our way to the #1 visited and perhaps best attraction on the Hawaiian islands; The Polynesian Culture Center with its Ali’I Luau, or Prime Rib Dinner and experience the brand new night show, “Ha, Breath of Life.”

Day 2 (Sunday)

This morning breakfast will be provided at the resort.  We will then have an opportunity to attend LDS Church services (this is one of the greatest experiences of the whole trip).  Lunch is also provided at the resort and you will have time to do one of the most wonderful things about Hawaii; relax and view the majestic shoreline and Pacific Ocean!   We will gather together for dinner with an accompanying devotional regarding the great faith of the Polynesians and the early LDS missionaries and prophets who served in Hawaii. 

Day 3 (Monday): 

Breakfast will be provided by the Turtle Bay Resort and you will have free time to play in the ocean, golf, or ride horses, or whatever you want to do.  We will then return back to the wonderful Polynesian Culture Center to visit the Island Villages of Polynesia and eat lunch with an opportunity to visit the beautiful Laie Temple and visitor center and the campus of BYU-Hawaii.  After the Polynesian Culture Center, we then will return back to the Resort for dinner and relaxing.     

Day 4 (Tuesday):

Today we will arise early so we can visit Pearl Harbor, the Old historic LDS Tabernacle, Diamond Head and the famous Punch Bowl.  We will learn of some of the faithful pioneer saints who sacrificed so much to establish the Church on the islands of Hawaii.  We will eat lunch at the renowned restaurant named “Dukes” near the famous beach of Waikiki, and take a fun canoe ride on the surf of the Pacific Ocean.  An opportunity to visit the International Market Place for shopping will also be provided.  We are then off to Honolulu International Airport to the Hawaiian island of Maui and to the magnificent Sheraton Maui Spa and Resort and enjoy the Sheraton Black Rock Polynesian Luau. 

Day 5 (Wednesday)

Today will never be forgotten!  We will eat breakfast and then take, what some call the best thing to do in Hawaii, a helicopter tour over the breathtaking Haleakala Crater, see beautiful cascading waterfalls, and visit over the little Hawaiian town of Hana, and many other sites along the way.  This ride is of those experiences you will never forget.  In the evening we will meet over at Lahaina and take a private sunset dinner cruise and devotional as we talk about some of the great stories of pertaining the prophets and missionaries who served in Maui. 

Day 6 (Thursday)

Today you can take a big breath and relax!  After all, you are in Hawaii! You can golf, play in the ocean or take an excursion.  You can go to the Whaler Village on Ka’anapali Beach, take the Sugar Cane Train, or whatever you desire.  (In the afternoon there will be an opportunity to see the blow hole of Nakalele (This is really unbelievable!).  

Day 7 (Friday)

We will eat breakfast, and then check out of the hotel and head to the fascinating Maui Plantation, the breath taking Maui Ocean Center, have lunch, and then see the little Pulehu LDS Chapel, a place that some prophets have said is “one of the most sacred places on earth.” We will then visit the majestic Iao Valley.  We will have dinner together at a restaurant near the airport and prepare to fly home.  

Day 8 (Saturday)

Mahalo! We will arrive home in the morning from an incredible experience, both culturally, spiritually, educationally, and socially, awaiting the video of the trip so you can relive some of the greatest memories of your life!

TOUR COSTS AND DETAILS

COST PER PERSON:

Double Occupancy: $2485 per person  – does not include airfare

Single Occupancy: $3035 – does not include airfare

DEPOSIT REQUIRED: $500 per person.

ROOMMATES: Single people may sign up for accommodations on a share basis and will be assigned roommates as circumstances permit.  If a roommate is unavailable, the participant will be notified of the adjusted price prior to departure.

CANCELLATION FEES: A $25 fee will be charged by Anderson Tours, LLC for all cancellations until 60 days prior to departure, at which time the fee will be $100.  In addition, all cancellation charges imposed by airlines, hotels, vendors, operators, etc., will be passed on to the participant.

AIRFARE

Because our tour participants are coming on to the tour from different states and even countries, we do not include the price of the airfare. We are more than happy to help you arrange for your flights but the price is not reflected in the price of the tour. If you are arranging your flights we will need that information. We will be looking into group flights and will let all participants know what we find.

Early reservations are strongly recommended, and a deposit of $500 per person is required at the time of booking, with the remaining balance due 60 days prior to departure.  Applications received after this date should include full payment.  Any payments made after this date should also include also include full payment.  Any payments made 30 days prior to departure must be in the form of a money order.  Checks should be made payable to Anderson Tours.  All cancellation penalties are the responsibility of the participant.

THE HOLY LAND, PETRA, EGYPT & ROME

July 23 - August 8, 2011

DAY 1-2 (Sat & Sun July 23-24th):   FLY USA TO LONDON / TEL AVIV, ISRAEL

Today we fly to London, England where we experience a tube (subway) ride into downtown London and explore the wonders of this famous city. We have most of the day here and you will be free to visit Buckingham Palace, Trafalgar Square, Big Ben, the Tower of London, eat some fish & chips or whatever your heart desires, etc…. This evening we fly to Tel Aviv, Israel.                                                                                                                                                                                                       

Day 3 (Mon July 25th):   WALKING TOUR OF JERUSALEM!

We begin our day by visiting a money changer to exchange some American dollars into shekels (Israeli Currency). Today is one of our most enjoyable days as we venture through the wonders of the ‘Eternal City’! We begin by entering Herod’s gate and walk through the Old City and view the Temple Mount where we see the Dome of the Rock, the Wailing Wall, etc. We will view the current structures and discuss the past as well as the future of that site. We will next descend and view Lions Gate & the Mount of Olives. From there we are on the Via Dolorosa (or Path of Suffering. It is the path Jesus carried His cross to Golgotha). We’ll stop at St. Anne’s Cathedral (Pool of Bethesda) and the Antonio Fortress (Jesus before Pilate). Lunch will be in the Old City of Jerusalem. Our walking tour continues as we make our way to The Upper Room and then to Caiaphas’ Palace (St. Peter of Gallicantu). As we make our way back to the hotel we will be introduced to the shopkeeper that makes LDS scripture covers, necklaces, etc. Following dinner we will also visit a few shopkeepers near our hotel (olive wood, etc). They have been doing business with “The Mormons” for close to 30 years. We overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 4 (Tue July 26th):   MUSEUMS / HOLLOCAUST MUSEUM / BETHLEHEM

Our day begins with a sobering experience at the new and improved Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem. Our next stop is a very impressive miniature model of the city of Jerusalem in Christ’s day; The Model City. This will be followed up with an experience at the “Time Elevator Jerusalem” (a fun movie experience that recounts the history of Jerusalem). Next we will cross through ‘The Wall’ (20’ cement wall that separates Israel and Palestinian controlled land) to enjoy lunch. Our first afternoon visit is the birthplace of the Savior in Bethlehem (Church of the Nativity). Time permitting we will visit a local Bethlehem Olive Wood shop before crossing back through the wall. Our afternoon will conclude with a stop in the Shepherds’ Fields where we’ll reflect on the story of Jesus’ birth, Ruth, and the concept of “Sheep”. This evening those that are interested will have the unique opportunity to walk through the flowing water in Hezekiah’s Tunnel. We will again overnight in Jerusalem!

Day 5 (Wed July 27th):  Mt. CARMEL, TABOR / NAZARETH / GALILEE

This morning we will make our way north. Our first stop is at Caesarea which is on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea. We will view the ancient amphitheater and those desiring to dip their toes in the sea will have that opportunity. Our next stop will be Mount Carmel (Elijah & the Priests of Baal). On Mt. Carmel is a great view of the Jezreel Valley (Valley of Armageddon). Following lunch, near Carmel, we will drive down the valley to the ancient tel of Megiddo where we will discuss Armageddon, the 2nd Coming and the future of this Holy Land. We will then drive to a view of where Jesus spent most of His life, Nazareth. Our final site of the day will be an adventurous taxi ride up Mt. Tabor (Mount of Transfiguration) where we will reflect on the amazing experiences there!  We will conclude our day by traveling up and around the Sea of Galilee to our Hotel. Checking into our Hotel this evening is a joy. Every room is only steps away from the shore of the Sea of Galilee. Following dinner at our Hotel, you can enjoy a quiet, relaxing evening strolling on the Sea shores, etc.

Day 6 (Thurs July 28th):  SEA OF GALILEE / CAPERNAUM / GOLAN HEIGHTS

After breakfast we will load a small fishing boat and cross the Sea of Galilee to Capernaum. On our way we cut the engines & have a short discussion. On shore we’ll visit Capernaum and the Mount of Beatitudes where the Sermon on the Mount was delivered. Following lunch we will take a short nature hike to the ancient city and alter at Tel Dan. Our next stop will be at Banias, the ancient site of Ceasaria Philippi, where we will view a beautiful waterfall. As we bus our way home we travel on the Golan Heights where we can look over into Syria. Dinner is a unique experience at the St. Peter’s Fish restaurant that will be followed by another relaxing evening enjoying the Sea of Galilee at night. 

Day 7 (Fri July 29th):    JORDAN RIVER / JERICHO / FREE TIME IN JERUSALEM

Our day begins by visiting Yardenit at the Jordan River (Jesustraditional baptismal site). From here we will make our way back to Jerusalem. On our way we will visit the modern city and ancient ruins of Jericho. Following lunch and as we make our way to Jerusalem we will be traveling on the road from ‘Jerusalem to Jericho’. As we do so we will reflect on a certain parable. We will visit Lazarus’ Tomb and then conclude our day with some free time in Jerusalem where there are countless things to see and do. You could walk the walls of Jerusalem, spend time venturing and shopping in the Old City, visit the Mt. of Olives, Temple Mount, Garden Tomb, Golgotha, etc. This evening we will view how the Orthodox Jews bring in the Sabbath at the Western Wall. We will overnight in Jerusalem. 

 

Day 8 (Sat July 30th):   GETHSEMANE / CHURCH / MT. OLIVES / GARDEN TOMB

Today just might be the most memorable of all as we begin at the traditional site of the Garden of Gethsemane (Church of all Nations). We will then wander up and across the street to visit the Orson Hyde Memorial Park (Church regulated property) for a discussion and some ponder time. The view of Jerusalem during our Sacrament Service in the BYU Jerusalem Center is inspiring. On our way to lunch we will wander down the Mt. of Olives and pass thousands of Jewish graves, including those of the Biblical Prophets; Haggai & Zechariah. Lunch is a unique place in the Old City. From here we will reflect on the burial & resurrection of the Savior as we visit the two possible sites for Golgotha & Calvary. First we visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher [believed site for many Christians] and then the Garden Tomb [where others feel is the true site]. We overnight again in Jerusalem.

 

Day 9 (Sun July 31st):    QUMRAN / MASADA / PETRA, JORDAN

Today we will depart Jerusalem and go ‘down by the borders near the shore of the Red Sea’ (1 Nephi 2:5). On the way we will enjoy a visit to Qumram (discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls). We will next enjoy a picture of the natural spring and waterfall at Ein-Gedi (where David hid from King Saul). From here we will visit the majestic Masada where we will gondola to the top and be in wonder at its fabulous story. On our way to the Israeli/Jordanian border we will enjoy a discussion on Sodom & Gomorrah. We will cross the border and make our way up to fascinating city of Petra, Jordan where we will overnight.

 

Day 10 (Mon Aug 1st):    PETRA, JORDAN / EGYPT

This morning we explore Petra, the newly voted “Wonder of the World.” We will walk down the narrow canyon to the breathtaking view of the Treasury, Petra’s most famous landmark. You will have time to visit this fascinating city carved from the cliffs of the canyon and experience some of the best ruins found anywhere in the world. Petra was once a great commercial empire with a long history, it is best known today as the lost city in the Indiana Jones Movie, The Last Crusade.  This afternoon we will make our way over to St. Catherines in Egypt. Our Hotel (the Morganland Village) is near the base of “Mt. Moses”. We will enjoy a relaxing evening reviewing the scriptural account of Moses and the Children of Israel in preparation for our climb up the ancient temple….Mt Sinai. 

 

Day 11 (Tue Aug 2nd):   MT. SINAI / RED SEA / SHARM EL SHEIKH

We arise very early and enjoy a moonlight hike up Mount Sinai (Camels are available for those not able to make the entire hike or who would like the adventure). On top we will enjoy the sunrise and a very special meeting before making our descent. Those not able to make the hike can enjoy sleeping in or other things at the hotel. We will have lunch at Morganland before we depart. We then bus our way to one of the very best locations for snorkeling and deep sea diving in the world…Sharm El Sheikh (Ras Mohammed). We will enjoy the exciting night life of this popular resort city before retiring in our luxurious hotel.

Day 12 (Wed Aug 3rd):  SNORKELING AT RED SEA / EXODUS / CAIRO, EGYPT

This morning we will discover one of the most popular natural reserves in the world; Ras Mohammed. Those interested can enjoy some of the world’s best snorkeling & deep sea diving and those who are not interested in getting in the water can relax on the sea shore reading, sun bathing, reading, or they can remain in our luxurious hotel which has a beautiful pool, spa options, etc. This evening we will either drive to Cairo where we will be following the route of the Exodus of the Children of Israel out of Egypt in reverse or we will fly to Luxor. We will also cross the Suez Canal. [Those not participating in the Egypt option will go to the airport in Cairo and begin their journey back to the USA]. Those continuing on will overnight in Cairo.

 

EGYPT & ROME OPTION:  additional $785

Day 13 (Thurs Aug 4th):  SAKKARA / MEMPHIS / PYRAMIDS / SPHINX / MOSQUE / CRUISE

Today will be a full day touring Cairo! We begin with Memphis and then take in Sakkara (the oldest pyramid in the world). We then enjoy the splendor of the famous Pyramids and Sphinx. Those interested can go inside the Pyramid as well as take a camel ride. Time permitting we will visit the Muhamed Ali Mosque as well as the local papyrus, and perfume factories to see and experience how these unique Egyptian items are made. Our day will conclude with an unforgettable dinner & entertainment aboard a small cruise ship (on the Nile). This evening those that will continue onto Luxor will take a short flight down to the fascinating city of Luxor and overnight. Those that must return home will overnight in Cairo and fly out early the next morning.  

 

Day 14 (Fri Aug 5th):  LUXOR: VALLEY OF KINGS / LUXOR TEMPLE

Over 60% of the world’s ancient ruins are located in the city of Luxor. We begin on the West Bank where we will visit the Necropolis of Thebes. Next is one of the most intriguing spots in the world; the “Valley of the Kings” and “Valley of the Queens” (burial place for the Egyptian Pharaohs & Queens). You will marvel at the similarities in Egyptian and LDS beliefs and rituals! Following lunch we will take pictures of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut and the Collosi of Memnon & Nobels. Our day will conclude with a visit to the Temple of Ramses III as well as the impressive Luxor Temple. Time permitting we have the opportunity of visiting the local alabaster, and rug/carpet factories to see and experience how these unique Egyptian items are made. We will overnight in Luxor.

Day 15 (Sat Aug 6th):  LUXOR: KARNAK / CAIRO: MUSEUM

Today we will visit one of the 7 wonders of the ancient world which is one of the largest temple structures in the world; the Karnak Temple. You will truly be amazed at this 64 acre temple. These structures are amazing and must be seen to be believed. You might even enjoy this experience more than the Pyramids in Cairo! This afternoon we will fly back to Cairo and make a visit to the Egyptian Museum. This will put a perfect capstone to the Egyptian historical sites & artifacts. We will make our way to the airport and fly to Rome, Italy.  

Day 16 (Sun Aug 7th):   ROME, ITALY 

Today we enjoy a full day visiting some of the amazing sites in Rome. If you desire to stay in a group we plan to visit St. Peters and Vatican City first, which includes Michaelangelo’s famous Sistene Chapel. We will next make our way over to San Giovanni and then take the walk that leads to the Pantheon, Coliseum, and the Forum. We will also try to take in some Italian Ice Cream (Gelatto) and some tasty Italian food. Tonight we overnight in a Convent near the historic sites.  

Day 17 (Mon Aug 8th):   FLY HOME 

This morning we take a very early flight from Rome to London and then onto the USA where we will be reunited with our loved ones!

Dinner is a unique experience at the St. Peter’s Fish restaurant that will be followed by another relaxing evening enjoying the Sea of Galilee at night.

Day 6 (Thurs July 29th):    JORDAN RIVER / JERICHO / DEAD SEA / JERUSALEM / TUNNEL

Our day begins by visiting Yardenit at the Jordan River (Jesustraditional baptismal site). From here we will make our way back to Jerusalem. On our way we will visit the modern city and ancient ruins of Jericho. Following lunch we will make our way to the Dead Sea. This is a very unique experience taking a float in the Dead Sea. You cannot sink! As we make our way to Jerusalem we will be traveling on the road from ‘Jerusalem to Jericho’. As we do so we will reflect on a certain parable. We will visit Lazarus’ Tomb and then conclude our day with a walk through the flowing water in Hezekiah’s Tunnel. We will overnight in Jerusalem.

Day 7 (Fri July 30th):   MUSEUMS / HOLLOCAUST MUSEUM / BETHLEHEM

Our day begins with a sobering experience at the new and improved Holocaust Museum, Yad Vashem. Our next stop is a very impressive miniature model of the city of Jerusalem in Christ’s day; The Model City. This will be followed up with an experience at the “Time Elevator Jerusalem” (a fun movie experience that recounts the history of Jerusalem). We will enjoy lunch on Ben Yehuda Street where there is some good Jewish shopping. Next we will cross through ‘The Wall’ (20’ cement wall that separates Israel and Palestinian controlled land). Our first afternoon visit is the birthplace of the Savior in Bethlehem (Church of the Nativity). Time permitting we will visit a local Bethlehem Olive Wood shop before crossing back through the wall. Our afternoon will conclude with a stop in the Shepherds’ Fields where we’ll reflect on the story of Jesus’ birth, Ruth, and the concept of “Sheep”. This evening we will view how the Orthodox Jews bring in the Sabbath at the Western Wall. We will again overnight in Jerusalem!

Day 8 (Sat July 31th):   GETHSEMANE / CHURCH / MT. OLIVES / GARDEN TOMB

Today just might be the most memorable of all as we begin at the traditional site of the Garden of Gethsemane (Church of all Nations). We will then wander up and across the street to visit the Orson Hyde Memorial Park (Church regulated property) for a discussion and some ponder time. The view of Jerusalem during our Sacrament Service in the BYU Jerusalem Center is inspiring. On our way to lunch we will wander down the Mt. of Olives and pass thousands of Jewish graves, including those of the Biblical Prophets; Haggai & Zechariah. Lunch is a unique place in the Old City. From here we will reflect on the burial & resurrection of the Savior as we visit the two possible sites for Golgotha & Calvary. First we visit the Church of the Holy Sepulcher [believed site for many Christians] and then the Garden Tomb [where others feel is the true site]. Tonight will be our last night in Jerusalem.

Day 9 (Sun Aug 1st):    QUMRAN / DEAD SEA / MASADA / PETRA, JORDAN

Today we will depart Jerusalem and go ‘down by the borders near the shore of the Red Sea’ (1 Nephi 2:5). On the way we will pass Qumram (discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls). We will next enjoy a picture of the natural spring and waterfall at Ein-Gedi (where David hid from King Saul). From here we will visit the majestic Masada where we will gondola to the top and be in wonder at its fabulous story. On our way to the Israeli/Jordanian border we will enjoy a discussion on Sodom & Gomorrah. We will cross the border and make our way up to fascinating city of Petra, Jordan where we will overnight.

Day 10 (Mon Aug 2nd):    PETRA, JORDAN / EGYPT

This morning we explore Petra, the newly voted “Wonder of the World.” We will walk down the narrow canyon to the breathtaking view of the Treasury, Petra’s most famous landmark. You will have time to visit this fascinating city carved from the cliffs of the canyon and experience some of the best ruins found anywhere in the world. Petra was once a great commercial empire with a long history, it is best known today as the lost city in the Indiana Jones Movie, The Last Crusade.  This afternoon we will make our way over to St. Catherines in Egypt. Our Hotel (the Morganland Village) is near the base of “Mt. Moses”. We will enjoy a relaxing evening reviewing the scriptural account of Moses and the Children of Israel in preparation for our climb up the ancient temple….Mt Sinai.

Day 11 (Tue Aug 3rd):   MT. SINAI / SHARM EL SHEIKH

We arise very early and enjoy a moonlight hike up Mount Sinai (Camels are available for those not able to make the entire hike or who would like the adventure). On top we will enjoy the sunrise and a very special meeting before making our descent. Those not able to make the hike can enjoy sleeping in or other things at the hotel. Following our climb we will bus our way to the Red Sea which is one of the very best locations for snorkeling and deep sea diving in the world (Sharm El Sheikh–Ras Mohammed). This evening those interested in visiting Naama Bay can do so. It can be fun to see the exciting night life of this popular resort city before retiring in our luxurious hotel.

Day 12 (Wed Aug 4th):   RED SEA — SNORKELING & DIVING

This morning we will continue to enjoy the Red Seas. Those interested can enjoy some of the world’s best snorkeling & deep sea diving and those who are not interested in getting in the water can relax at the resort hotel which has a beautiful pool, lazy river, spa options, etc. We once again overnight in Sharm.

Day 13 (Thurs Aug 5th):   ABU SIMBEL (?) / LUXOR: LUXOR TEMPLE KARNAK

This morning we take a short flight from Sharm and have the privilege of visiting one of the most spectacular sites in all of Egypt…Abu Simbel. We will we fly from Sharm to Luxor and then to Aswan and then to reach Abu Simbel we need to take a short flight to arrive at this spectacular temple built into the mountain. Following this experience we will make our way back to Luxor for a relaxing afternoon. Following dinner we will enjoy an evening visit to the impressive Luxor Temple. These structures are amazing and must be seen to be believed. You might even enjoy these experiences more than the Pyramids in Cairo! We overnight in Luxor.

Day 14 (Fri Aug 6th):  LUXOR: VALLEY OF KINGS / KARNAK & LUXOR TEMPLES

Over 60% of the world’s ancient ruins are located in the city of Luxor. We begin on the West Bank where we will visit one of the most intriguing spots in the world; the “Valley of the Kings” and “Valley of the Queens” (burial place for the Egyptian Pharaohs & Queens). You will marvel at the similarities in Egyptian and LDS beliefs and rituals! We will next take pictures of the Temple of Queen Hatshepsut, the Collosi of Memnon & Nobels as well as Pit Tomb #33 where the Book of Abraham was discovered. We will next explore the Temple of Ramses III. Our day will conclude with a visit to one of the 7 Wonders of the Ancient World which is also one of the largest temple structures in the world; the Karnak Temple. You will truly be amazed at this 64 acre temple. We again overnight in Luxor. (OR FLY TO CAIRO IF POSSIBLE)

Day 15 (Sat Aug 7th):  CAIRO:  PYRAMIDS / SPHINX / EGYPTIAN MUSEUM, etc

Today we take a short flight to Cairo and then enjoy a full day touring the sites in the area! We begin with the splendor of the famous Pyramids and Sphinx. Those interested can go inside the Pyramid as well as take a camel ride. From here we will make a visit to the Egyptian Museum and explore all the unique items there (including the opportunity to view real live mummies as well as King Tut items). Time permitting we will visit one of the largest mosques in the world; the Mohamed Ali Mosque. With any luck we will also visit Memphis and Sakkara (the oldest pyramid in the world). We will enjoy a short rest in our hotel rooms before making our way to the airport to fly to Rome, Italy.  

Day 16 (Sun Aug 8th):   ROME, ITALY 

Today we enjoy a full day visiting some of the amazing sites in Rome. If you desire to stay in a group we plan to visit St. Peters and Vatican City first, which includes Michaelangelo’s famous Sistene Chapel. We will next make our way over to San Giovanni and then take the walk that leads to the Pantheon, Coliseum, and the Forum. We will also try to take in some Italian Ice Cream (Gelatto) and some tasty Italian food. Tonight we overnight in a Convent near the historic sites.  

Day 17 (Mon Aug 9th):   FLY HOME 

This morning we take a very early flight from Rome to London and then onto the USA where we will be reunited with our loved ones!

LDS CHURCH HISTORY & AMERICAN HERITAGE TOUR

May 28 – June 11, 2011

This tour is specifically designed for young adult travelers or the young at heart!

  

Day 1 (Sat May 28):   FLY TO BWI / GETTYSBURG / WASHINGTON DC TEMPLE

We depart SLC early and fly to the BWI airport in Baltimore, Maryland. When we arrive we make our way over to the historic and unforgettable Gettysburg Battlefield and Visitors Center where we will enjoy the new Visitors Center and multi-media experience which will help us understand the momentous events that took place here. Afterwards we visit Little Round Top where the pivotal battle for the Civil war was won. Dinner is a pleasure at General Pickett’s Buffet in Gettysburg. After dinner we will make our way over to the amazing Washington D.C. Temple. We overnight in Rockville, Maryland.

Day 2 (Sun May 29):  DOWNTOWN WASHINGTON D.C. / MEMORIALS 

We begin today with a special Sacrament Service at our hotel before making our visits at our Nation’s Capital. We start with a group picture at the Capital Building and then you are free for the rest of the morning to enjoy the Smithsonian, Holocaust Museum, Washington Memorial, White House, Capital Building or whatever your heart desires. We conclude our downtown visits [with our group] visiting the Lincoln, Jefferson, Vietnam War, Korean War, as well as the new WWII Memorials. Following our visits we will make our way over to Philadelphia and overnight.   

Day 3 (Mon May 30):   PHILADELPHIA / LIBERTY BELL/ NYC / HARMONY

This morning we visit the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall [where the Declaration of Independence & Constitution were signed]. We will then make our way over to the Big Apple and take in some of the sights and sounds of this great city.  This afternoon travel up to Harmony, Pennsylvania/Susquehanna River where, among other things, the Priesthood was restored. We overnight in Binghamton, NY.

Day 4 (Tues May 31):   JOSEPH’S BIRTHPLACE: SHARON, VERMONT  

Today we make our way up to the Sharon, Vermont area. A few years ago members of the Church all over the world celebrated the 200th Anniversary of the birth of the Prophet Joseph Smith and for us today we will get the opportunity of going visit his birthplace. This great Prophet of the Restoration began his mortal sojourn here and we will enjoy a day of reflection as we view the Monument and Visitors Center there. We overnight in Quechee Vt. 

Day 5 (Wed June 1):    FAYETTE / PALMYRA: HILL CUMORAH

Today, we will make our way over to the grassroots area of the Church in upstate New York.

Our first site is Fayette. The Church was officially organized here in 1830 at the Peter Whitmer Sr. Log House. Today is a memorable one as we visit many of the sites in the Palmyra area. We begin by taking in E. B. Grandin Press and Print Shop where the first copies of the Book of Mormon were made. Nearby is the grave site of Alvin Smith [brother of Joseph]. Our final visit of the day is the Hill Cumorah with the new Visitors Center. Tonight those that are interested and able will enjoy doing baptisms in the Palmyra Temple! We overnight in Palmyra, NY.

Day 6 (Thurs June 2):  PALMYRA: SACRED GROVE / NIAGARA FALLS / KIRTLAND

Our morning will begin with a visit to the Sacred Grove where the restoration of the Gospel began. We will then make a visit to the log and frame houses of Joseph Smith Sr. Following this experience we will travel to the majestic Niagara Falls for a memorable photo opportunity as well as a voyage on one of the ‘Maid of the Mist’ boats that take you right under the falls. From here we travel south to Kirtland, Ohio. This area is amazing as we visit four different sites where the Father and Son appeared. Our first stop is the new Historic Kirtland Visitors Center near the Newel K. Whitney Store. We spend some time in the ‘School of the Prophets’ room and conclude our day with a stop at the Morley Farm. We overnight near Mentor, Ohio.

Day 7 (Fri June 3):  KIRTLAND, OHIO: TEMPLE / QUARY / HIRAM

Today we begin with a visit the John Johnson Home [D&C 76] in Hiram, Ohio. Next we visit the Temple Quarry before going into the Kirtland Temple, which was the first Temple built in this dispensation [D&C 109 & 110]. Following lunch those interested can spend the afternoon at the #1 rated Amusement Park on the planet. The famous Cedar Point Amusement Park in Sandusky, Ohio is located on the shore of Lake Erie and is the second oldest amusement park in North America. We overnight in Sandusky, Ohio.     

Day 8 (Sat June 4):  AMISH COUNTRY

Today we are traveling through Amish country and cross Ohio into Indiana. We have an incredible experience as we stop in Shipshewana, Indiana for an Amish cooked meal. We first enjoy a tour of the MENNO-HOF (Mennonite-Amish) Visitors Center and Museum. This museum shares a great presentation of the history of this very fascinating people as well as many other religions throughout the Dark Ages. We also will feast on a home-cooked Amish meal that will truly be memorable.  We will overnight near Joliet Illinois.

Day 9 (Sun June 5):   CARTHAGE JAIL / NAUVOO

Today as we make our way across the State of Illinois we enjoy a Sacrament Service on the bus (perhaps your first traveling church service!) When we arrive in Carthage we reflect on the Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith at the Carthage Jail. Following this sobering experience we venture over to Nauvoo and re-experience history as we view the newly rebuilt Nauvoo Temple! Time permitting we visit the LDS Visitors Center where we see the model of 1846 Nauvoo and the magnificent sculpture garden that features the Monument to Women. We overnight in Nauvoo at the Nauvoo Family Inn & Suites.

Day 10 (Mon June 6):   MORE OF HISTORIC NAUVOO

Today we spend our day soaking in the sites and sounds of Historic Nauvoo. For those able and interested the day begins with Baptisms/Temple Session at the newly constructed Nauvoo Temple. In Historic Nauvoo there are over 30 sites to see and choose from; several Historical Homes and sites, Community of Christ (RLDS) Visitors Center, a horse and carriage ride, a good local fudge factory, etc. For those interested in the Missionary Production “High Hopes and Riverboats” will also be able to attend those. These sites should keep us all busy for the day.  This evening those interested may enjoy “Rendezvous in Old Nauvoo”, or “Sunset by the Mississippi”; both are productions put on by the local Missionaries. We again overnight in Nauvoo.

Day 11 (Tues June 7):   INDEPENDENCE / LIBERTY JAIL   

Today we explore the Independence, Missouri area with a visit to the Community of Christ Temple and Headquarters (formerly RLDS) as well as the ‘Temple Lot’ and the newly remodeled LDS Visitors Center. We will also spend some visiting the “Temple Prison”—Liberty Jail to learn and experience that sacred location.  There will also be a visit to the Liberty Cemetery.  We overnight in Kearney, Missouri.

Day 12 (Wed June 8):   ADAM-ONDI-AHMAN / FAR WEST / HAUNS MILL

Our historical sites today will be many.  We will see where the human race began at Adam-Ondi-Ahman. We will spend some time exploring the past, present and future significance of this sacred ground.  We will visit Far West where, among other things, the cornerstones for a temple were laid.  Also, we will visit the location of Haun’s Mill to learn of the tragedy that occurred there and explore the lessons that can be applied to us today.  We will overnight in St. Joseph.

Day 13 (Thurs June 9):   KAINSVILLE / WINTER QUARTERS

Today we make our way to the Kainsville Tabernacle (Council Bluffs, Iowa) where the Church has constructed a beautiful new Visitors Center. We then make our way to Omaha, Nebraska to visit the Mormon Trail Center at Historic Winter Quarters. It was here where the Saints who fled Nauvoo ended for the winter of 1846-47. Here we also see the Pioneer Cemetery and the new Winter Quarters Temple. We then make our way over to North Platte, Nebraska and spend the night.

Day 14 (Fri June 10):  PIONEER TRAIL / NEBRASKA & WYOMING

Today we see a good portion of the Pioneer trail as we make our way across Nebraska and into Wyoming. As we venture across the ‘Trail’ we enjoy and share stories of our Pioneer heritage.  On our way to Martin’s Cove we see more of the Mormon Trail when we pass Devil’s Gate.  We will also stop and climb Independence Rock where you can look for names of pioneer ancestors carved there. At Martins Cove we reflect on the unforgettable events that occurred there. It was here where the Martin & Willie Handcart Companies were stuck in the early snow storms of 1847. We will also take the opportunity to pull some pioneer handcarts into the Cove for some reflection time.  We will overnight in Rawlins, Wyoming.

Day 15 (Sat June 11):  INDEP. ROCK / MARTIN’S COVE / S.L. VALLEY

Today we will continue the Pioneer trail by through Wyoming and into the great state of Utah.   We conclude the trail when we reach Immigration Canyon and enter the Salt Lake Valley! Our final historic site is the “This is the Place” monument.  We will spend some time here absorbing the whole experience and will take a final group picture and will then make our way home!

PATRIOTS AND PIONEERS TOUR American & LDS Church History

Day 1 (Sat. July 10): FLY to BALTIMORE, MARYLAND AND WASHINGTON D.C. MONUMENTS
This morning/afternoon we will fly to the BWI airport in Baltimore, Maryland. Following our arrival we will have a catered picnic dinner at a park in the Washington DC area. We will have some instruction and then we’ll be off to tour some Washington DC sites. We will tour the Monuments at night as a group. When the sun goes down Washington lights up with beauty. As a group we’ll see some of the city’s most popular monuments such as the Capitol Building, the White House, the Jefferson Memorial and the Washington Monument. We will also make stops at the FDR Memorial, the Lincoln Memorial, the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, the World War II Memorial and the Korean War Veterans Memorial, allowing you to see these sites in a different light. We will then go to our hotel and enjoy a good night’s rest in preparation for a marvelous two weeks together. We overnight in the Washington DC area.

Day 2 (Sun. July 11): WASHINGTON D.C. / FREE TIME / ARLINGTON CEMETERY/ WHITE HOUSE/ SMITHSONIANS/ D.C. TEMPLE
After a good breakfast and attending church, we will begin our touring day at our Nation’s Capital. We start by stopping at the Iwo Jima Memorial and then Arlington National Cemetery where you can see the famous changing of the guard, JFK’s eternal flame, etc. To help with your tour experience at Arlington and during free time, you will be given a trolley pass for Tourmobile Sightseeing. The trolley will give you the opportunity to get off and visit memorials, museums, and historical points of interest; as well as opportunities for shopping and dining throughout the city. (The tour has many stops and includes a fully narrated tour of Washington D.C. covering over 100 points of interest.) Dinner will be in the Washington DC area again and then we will head to the amazing Washington DC temple. We will enjoy the temple at night and the Visitors Center and have a great experience together to close our Sabbath Day. We overnight in the same hotel in the Washington DC area.

Day 3 (Mon. July 12): GETTYSBURG BATTLEFIELD / HERSHEY, PA/PHILADELPHIA/  LIBERTY BELL/INDEPENDENCE HALL
Today we make our way to the historic and unforgettable Gettysburg Battlefield and Visitors Center. We will experience the new Museum and Visitors Center (opened in April 2008) as well as a new feature film, A New Birth of Freedom. We will have some time to look around the area and have some instruction. Afterwards we will visit Little Round Top where part of the battle took place and have an amazing experience on top of a very cool tower. Lunch is a pleasure at General Pickett’s Buffet in Gettysburg. We will then travel to Hershey, Pennsylvania for a brief stop at the famous HERSHEY’S CHOCOLATE WORLD! Chocolate … chocolate … and more chocolate! Hershey’s Chocolate World has been satisfying cravings for the world’s greatest sweet treat for 30 years. That evening we will spend some time in the amazing city of Philadelphia. We will visit the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall where the Declaration of Independence & Constitution were signed. Dinner is of course…Philly Cheese steaks!  We overnight in Philadelphia. Time permitting we will go to the famous “Rocky” steps at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Day 4 (Tues. July 13): PHILADELPHIA / FERRY TO NYC/ ELLIS ISLAND/ STATUE OF LIBERTY / BROADWAY PLAY
Today we start our morning in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Next we cross over the border to New Jersey where we will take our Ferry Boat into NYC. This will not only provide us with transportation into New York City, but will also allow us to stop at the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island and see the beautiful New York skyline. We will try our best to get tickets to go up into the crown of the Statue of Liberty (just reopened). Upon arrival to NYC, we will make a brief stop at Ground Zero (time permitting) and then catch the subway to our hotel to eat and change for the Broadway Play, Wicked ! We overnight in New York City just blocks away from the Gershwin Theater and Times Square.

Day 5 (Wed. July 14): FREE TIME IN NYC / MANHATTAN TEMPLE
This morning you are free to venture out and explore the ‘Big Apple’ as your heart desires: (Ground Zero, Empire State Building, Wall Street, Broadway, Times Square, Central Park, Madison Square Garden, the LDS Manhattan Temple, etc.). For those interested, baptisms for the dead or a session may be done in the Manhattan Temple. Maps, suggested itineraries and ideas will be provided to help you enjoy your free day in NYC. We will depart NYC in the early evening. Time permitting, we will stop at Salem, MA (Salem Witch Trials) and Topsfield, MA (D&C 111).  We overnight near Boston, MA.

Day 6 (Thurs. July 15):  BOSTON FREE TIME/ FREEDOM TRAIL/ TUBING ON WHITE RIVER/ BONFIRE
Today we will be in Boston, MA. With its crowded, narrow, winding streets and colonial-era buildings, Boston brings American history alive for everyone who visits. We will relive Boston’s role in the American Revolution at the many stops and options along the Freedom Trail. There are 16 historical sites to choose from including; the New England Aquarium, the Children’s Museum, the Old State House, and Paul Revere’s House. Other options nearby are the Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, JFK Library and Museum, Boston Public Garden, Boston Common, the New England Holocaust Memorial, Old North Church and the USS Constitution. Other possible visits during free time include Harvard University, Fenway Park, Cheers Restaurant and more. We will then drive to Vermont, where we will enjoy a tubing adventure down the beautiful, lazy, White River. Dinner will be a BBQ and bonfire in a meadow in the beautiful green state of Vermont. We overnight in a darling country inn in White River Junction, VT.

Day 7 (Fri. July 16): JOSEPH’S BIRTHPLACE: SHARON, VERMONT/ TUNBRIDGE VILLAGE STORE/  BASEBALL HALL OF FAME
After a true Vermont breakfast we will have a quick bus tour of Dartmouth College led by our innkeeper. We will then get the opportunity of visiting Joseph Smith’s birthplace in Sharon, Vermont. This great Prophet of the Restoration began his mortal sojourn here and we will enjoy a day of reflection as we view the Monument and Visitors Center there. We will also visit Tundbridge, VT where Lucy Mack first met Joseph Smith Sr. Lunch is a local, quaint establishment in the hills of Vermont that you will talk about for days. We will then make our way over to the Cooperstown, New York area. Those wanting to visit the Baseball Hall of Fame will go that evening. There will also be opportunities for shopping, relaxing at the hotel or enjoying the lake. We will overnight in the Cooperstown, NY area.

Day 8 (Sat. July 17): HARMONY, PENNSYLVANIA: SUSQUEHANNA RIVER / FAYETTE, NEW YORK: PETER WHITMER FARM/ HILL CUMORAH PAGEANT
Our first visit of the day will be Harmony, Pennsylvania to the Susquehanna River where, among other things, the Priesthood was restored (D&C 13). From here we will head off to the grassroots area of the Church in upstate New York. Our first site in this area will be Fayette, New York. The Church was officially organized here in 1830 at the Peter Whitmer Sr. Log House (D&C 21). We will conclude our day at the famous Hill Cumorah Pageant. We overnight near Palmyra, NY.

Day 9 (Sun. July 18): PALMYRA SITES/ SACRED GROVE/ PALMYRA TEMPLE / E.B. GRANDIN/ ALVINS GRAVE/ ERIE CANAL
Today is an amazing day visiting all the sites in the Palmyra area. We will begin at the log house of Joseph Smith Sr. and enjoy some reflection time in the Sacred Grove (JSH 1). Following this experience we will visit the Palmyra Temple and then take in the E. B. Grandin Press and Print Shop. Nearby is the gravesite of Alvin Smith (brother of Joseph-D&C 137) and the famous corners of the 4 churches. We will also visit the Hill Cumorah. We will attend church in the Palmyra area and again overnight in the Palmyra area.

Day 10 (Mon. July 19): NIAGARA FALLS /MAID OF THE MIST/ HISTORIC KIRTLAND
This morning we will travel to the majestic Niagara Falls. We will get some great photographs of the Falls and then take a voyage on one of the ‘Maid of the Mist’ boats that takes us right near the powerful mist of the falls. Afterwards we will travel south to Kirtland, OH and visit Historic Kirtland. We will visit the Historic Kirtland Visitors Center and sites including the Newel K. Whitney Store (School of the Prophets-D&C 88-89), sawmill, ashery, Johnson Inn and more. We overnight in Mentor, Ohio, near Kirtland.

Day 11 (Tues. July 20): KIRTLAND TEMPLE / HIRAM. OH: JOHN JOHNSON FARM / AMISH TOWN / FLIGHT TO KANSAS CITY, MO
Our morning will start with a visit to the Kirtland Temple which was the first Temple built in this dispensation (D&C 109 & 110). We will also visit the Temple Quarry and the Isaac Morley Farm. Next we will go to the John Johnson Home (D&C 76) in Hiram, Ohio. That afternoon we will make a short drive to Middlefield, Ohio to visit Amish country and have lunch at a delicious Amish restaurant. We will then head to the Cleveland, OH airport for our flight to Kansas City, MO.

Day 12 (Wed. July 21): INDEPENDENCE / FAR WEST/ LIBERTY/ ADAM-ONDI-AHMAN/ QUINCY, IL
Today we will explore Independence, Missouri with visits to the Community of Christ Temple and Headquarters (formerly RLDS) as well at the ‘Temple Lot’ and the wonderful LDS Visitors Center. Next we will see Liberty Jail, known as the Prison Temple (D&C 121-123). We will then venture over to Far West (D&C 115,119) where, among other things, the cornerstones for a temple were laid. Next we will visit the amazing Valley of Adam-Ondi-Ahman. Later we will travel to Quincy, IL where we will overnight in a fabulous lodge!

Day 13 (Thurs. July 22): CARTHAGE JAIL/ NAUVOO BURIAL GROUNDS/ FREE TIME IN HISTORIC NAUVOO/ NAUVOO PAGEANT
Today we will head to Carthage Jail for an amazing, yet sobering experience as we reflect on the Martyrdom of Joseph and Hyrum Smith (D&C 135). We will visit the Nauvoo Burial Grounds and then check into our hotel. You will have some time to start your exploration of Historic Nauvoo. In Historic Nauvoo there are over 30 sites to see and choose from; several Historical Homes and sites, Community of Christ (RLDS) Visitors Center and sites, a horse and carriage ride, a good local fudge factory, etc. These sites should keep us all busy and then we will attend the incredible Nauvoo Pageant. We overnight in Nauvoo, just blocks from the temple!

Day 14 (Fri. July 23) FREE TIME IN HISTORIC NAUVOO/ NAUVOO TEMPLE/ CLOSING BANQUET/ TRAIL OF HOPE
Today we will spend our day soaking in the sites and sounds of Historic Nauvoo. We have temple appointments for Baptisms and Endowments as well. We will have dinner at the famous Hotel Nauvoo. This evening we will have our closing banquet and a testimony meeting. We will also plan on a stroll down Parley Street (The Trail of Hope) together and enjoy the sunset on the Mississippi River as. We will again overnight in Nauvoo.

Day 15 (Sat. July 24): NAUVOO/ ST LOUIS, MISSOURI/ ST LOUIS ARCH/ FLIGHT HOME

Today there will be a few early hours for taking in some more of historic Nauvoo. We will then board the bus and travel to St. Louis, Missouri. Time permitting, we will see the famous St. Louis Arch. We will then fly from the St. Louis airport to our homes to be reunited with our loved ones that evening.
